Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport (PHX) bills itself "America's Friendliest Airport" and lives up to that reputation meeting the needs of disabled passengers.
One of the Southwest’s busiest airports, serving 110,000 daily passengers on 1,500 total flights, PHX serves the traveling needs of passengers using wheelchairs, and those with sensory impairments. Check with the airline for the proper way to carry power chair batteries. When making any travel reservations, tell providers about the disability accommodations needed and whether the traveller has a guide dog, wheelchair, or oxygen. Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport Accommodations for Sensory Impaired PassengersPaging Assistance Locations (PALs) Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is the first in the world to provide Paging Assistance Locations where disabled travelers can send and receive messages. Names of people being paged are announced on speakers inside the terminal and displayed on monitors throughout the airport. Messages can be sent using a touch screen, braille-enhanced keyboard, telephone handset or headset, or an EZ access device for those with limited hand mobility. Instructions are available in English, Spanish or German. Phones for the Hearing Impaired Hearing aid compatible, amplified, and text telephones (TTY) are available in each PHX terminal. TTY pay phones are located on each level and baggage claim in Terminals 2, 3, and 4. Guide Dog Relief Parks Dogs may take a restroom or water break at the “Paw Pad” west of Terminal 3 or the “Bone Yard,” in Terminal 4. Each provides a fenced area, water spigots and bowls, and “mutt mitts” for cleaning up after the dog. Adult Changing Stations An adult changing station has been installed in Terminal 2 and another one is under construction in Terminal 3 in family restrooms designed to provide people with disabilities, and their caretakers if necessary, a comfortable and private location to change clothing or disposable undergarments. Accessible Transportation from PHX to Downtown PhoenixPhoenix Transit Bus #13 provides lift-equipped transportation to and from the airport. Courtesy phones are located next to baggage claim at each terminal. Note: In December 2008, Phoenix's METRO Light Rail will run a free shuttle bus between PHX and the 44th St./Sky Harbor station. The proposed Sky Harbor Airport Automated People Mover will eventually replace the shuttle.
